What is PCIT-ED?

PCIT-ED is Parent Child Interaction Therapy – Emotion Development.

PCIT was developed by Sheila Eyberg at the University of Florida and has been used for many years to help parents with children who have some behavioral problems. Dr. Luby and her colleagues have modified this treatment to focus on children’s emotional enhancement.

There are three phases of therapy:

  1. Child-Directed Interaction – Focuses on building the relationship between parent and child
  2. Parent-Directed Interaction – Focuses on safe and effective disciplinary techniques
  3. Emotional Development – Focuses on helping parent and child handle the child’s strong emotions

If you are seeking therapy, please reach out to the Hermann Center. The Early Emotional Development Program does not currently offer PCIT-ED.

What is an EEG?

EEG (electroencephalogram) is a non-invasive way for us to look at activity in the brain. During the EEG, your child will wear a special cap with small dots of non-toxic gel. The gel is made of salt and water and comes off easily in the water. During the EEG, your child will play some computer games where he/she will most likely win prizes and candy. After the EEG, we have shampoo to wash your child’s hair in the sink if you’d like.

How much does the program cost?

The program is offered at no charge.

How is our information used?

Ultimately, the information you provide helps doctors and therapists better understand how to help children.

Will my child’s data be kept confidential?

Your child’s data will be kept completely confidential. Your child’s name will never be used in any report of this research. We videotape our studies to allow us to keep track of your child’s responses during the assessment and interactions during therapy sessions. These videotapes are kept completely confidential and only identified by a random number. Unless we have your permission, only our research team will view the videotape.

What training or education has staff received?

All of our therapists have a master’s degree or higher. All therapists are certified in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy and have received training in how to conduct the Emotion Development portion of treatment. Therapists are supervised by Dr. Luby.

Will childcare for siblings and/or transportation be provided if needed?
