Funded by the NIMH from 12-19-07 to 11-30-2012.
Preschool Mood Disorders Developmental Continuity and School Age Outcomes Study – This project is a continuation of the 1 R01: Validation of Preschool Depressive Syndromes. It follows this preschool population into school age and early adolescents for another five-year period to investigate the nosology and longitudinal course of preschool depression.

  • R34 MH080163 Luby (PI)
Funded by the NIMH from 10/1/07 to 9/30/10.
Parent Child Interaction Therapy – Emotional Development (PCIT-ED) Study – Early Intervention in Depression: Dyadic Emotion Development Therapy for Preschool Children - This project modifies and expands a previously validated parent-child therapy (Parent Child Interaction Therapy, PCIT) for use in preschoolers with symptoms of depression. The modified therapy, Parent Child Interaction Therapy - Emotion Development (PCIT-ED) incorporates the enhancement of emotion development skills. The study will test this newly developed parent-child psychotherapy in preschoolers with depressive symptoms and compare it to an education control condition.

The PCIT-ED study is currently recruiting families who have particularly sad or irritable preschoolers for a psychotherapy treatment study. Potentially eligible preschoolers (age 3 - 5years 11 mos) may have the following kinds of moods and behaviors: often sad and/or plays things with sad themes, cries a lot, is grouchy or irritable a lot of the day, is hard on him/herself, seems to have low self esteem, reacts to mistakes with a excessive guilt, among other things. Neuroimaging of Melancholic Depressed Preschoolers at School Age - The aim of this study is to conduct follow-up psychiatric assessments and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in an ascertained group of children previously studied at preschool age with a known melancholic depression.

  • Luby (PI) & Barch – (Co-PI)
Funded by the CHADS Coalition from 2008 to 2010.
Functional Neuroimaging in a Depressed Preschool Population Pre and Post Treatment – The goal of the proposed study is to conduct functional imaging in depressed 3-6 year old children who are participating in an NIMH funded randomized controlled trial of a parent-child developmental therapy treatment or education control condition. The imaging study will conduct functional neuroimaging in very young depressed children pre and post treatment.
